Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, left, and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, died in a helicopter crash on Sunday 19 May 2024.

The Australian Iranian Friendship Association held a solemn memorial following the martyrdom of President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Sydney on Saturday 25 May at Husainiyat Sayeda Zaynab in Banksia.

During the helicopter crash in dense fog and snow in the mountainous terrain of Iran’s rugged East Azerbaijan province on Sunday 19 May 2024, in addition to the two top Iranian icons, additional deaths included Governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province, Malik Rahmati, Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Al-Hashem, representative of the Iranian supreme leader to East Azerbaijan, Sardar Seyed Mehdi Mousavi, head of Raisi’s guard team, the helicopter’s pilot Colonel Seyed Taher Mostafavi, co-pilot Colonel Mohsen Daryanush and flight technician Major Behrouz Ghadimi.

The memorial ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Australia Dr Ahmed Sadeghi, the Syrian Honorary Consul, Mr Maher Dabbagh and a large number of various community leaders and representatives of Islamic organisations.

The Master of Ceremony for the event was Mustafa Bismi.

The program commenced with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by international reciter Muhammad Hosseini.

The representative of the Supreme Islamic Shiite Council, Sheikh Kamal Moselemani gave the inaugural address followed by a number of speakers including representative of the Australian Iranian friendship association, Mr Hussein Dirani, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Junaidi and Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr Ahmed Sadeghi.

The memorial program concluded with a condolence speech by Sayyid Abdul Hussein Mortada.

The speakers’ expressed deep sadness at the passing of these great leaders and talked about their good conduct and attachment to the people of the Islamic republic of Iran and in serving the Iranian nation.

These martyrs also played a major role in supporting the Palestinian people in their struggle against the Zionist aggression against Gaza where the Israelis are committing the most horrific massacres against innocent women and children in all occupied Palestine, specially in Gaza.
