At Greendale Garden Cemetery, our vision extends beyond being a place of rest. We see the cemetery as a living classroom – a place where faith, culture, environment, and community come together.
With this in mind, Greendale has launched two unique educational initiatives: the Roots & Rites program for primary years, and the Land & Legacy program for secondary years.
Roots & Rites (Primary Years) is a two-hour hands-on excursion introducing students to Islamic burial traditions alongside lessons in environmental stewardship. The program combines faith-based learning with interactive activities, including:
- A guided cemetery tour exploring biodiversity and Islamic burial practices.
- Workbook activities that encourage observation and reflection on nature.
- A hands-on planting or nature-inspired craft activity.
- An introduction to Islamic funeral prayers and the burial process.

Students leave with an appreciation for simplicity, respect for nature, and the role cemeteries play in preserving biodiversity.
Land & Legacy (Secondary Years) expands these themes through a four-hour immersive excursion designed to connect faith, culture, and environmental responsibility. The program aligns with curriculum outcomes across Geography, Studies of Religion, Commerce, and English, and includes:
- Exploration of Islamic burial practices and environmental ethics.
- Interactive discussions on biodiversity and sustainability within cemetery spaces.
- An action-planning activity linking environmental care with Islamic principles.
- A detailed look at Islamic funeral prayers and the burial process.

This program encourages critical thinking, ethical reflection, and meaningful dialogue about the interconnectedness of life, death, and nature.
Both programs include a workbook to extend learning beyond the excursion, as well as a sausage sizzle lunch and drink – providing students with both intellectual nourishment and a sense of community.
Since their launch, our cemetery has welcomed Irfan College, Muslim Girls Grammar, and homeschooling groups, all of whom praised the programs for blending cultural education with environmental awareness in an engaging way.
These initiatives highlight Greendale’s commitment to being more than a cemetery – we are a hub for learning, reflection, and connection. For many students, it is their first experience of cemetery life outside of grief, transforming perceptions of these sacred spaces.
As one teacher reflected, “The students walked away not only with knowledge, but with a sense of reverence for the land and those who came before them.”
At Greendale, we believe that honouring the past should go hand in hand with protecting the future. Through Roots & Rites and Land & Legacy, we are working to nurture both. We would love to have your school participate, contact us via our website for more details.
