In a room filled with professionals, students, and community leaders, the Salaam Institute in partnership with KPMG Australia hosted a deeply compelling evening with Professor Khalil (Charlie) Shahin AO – an event that will be remembered as much for its candour and emotional resonance as for the extraordinary life story it unveiled.

Held on Wednesday 6 August in Adelaide and drawing a full house, the event titled Fuel, Faith & Fortune traced the remarkable journey of Professor Shahin from his arrival in Australia as a young refugee to becoming the founder of one of the nation’s largest private businesses.

It was not a celebration of wealth or success for its own sake, but a reflection on the principles that guided every step: family, discipline, faith, and service.

Over the course of the evening, Professor Shahin offered more than just anecdotes. He shared hard-earned truths about entrepreneurship, generational responsibility, and the importance of never forgetting where you came from.

With grace and humility, he spoke of setbacks, risks, and decisions that could not be untangled from his values and beliefs.

A Conversation grounded in purpose

This was not a corporate keynote or a polished TED Talk—it was something far more grounded and personal.

The audience was treated to a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the ethical backbone of Shahin’s leadership, the family relationships that shaped his thinking, and the quiet but unwavering presence of faith in every chapter of his journey.

He spoke of leadership not as a position, but as a responsibility—to your family, your community, and your country. At a time when business narratives often centre on profit and visibility, Professor Shahin offered a model of leadership based on intention, legacy, and upliftment.

The power of presence

Throughout the evening, audience members engaged not just as spectators, but as participants. Conversations carried over into the foyer, with many describing the talk as “grounding,” “powerful,” and “unexpectedly emotional.”

It was clear this was not just another event—it was a moment that reminded those in the room that success rooted in service is not only possible, but powerful.

The impact was clear. For many, the night offered more than inspiration. It affirmed that holding onto faith, values and purpose in the face of pressure and opportunity is not a limitation—it’s a strength.

About Salaam Institute

This event forms part of a broader series presented by the Salaam Institute, a platform dedicated to bringing Muslim-led thought leadership into the heart of Australia’s national conversations.

Through public events, community dialogues, and education initiatives, the Institute is building spaces where Muslim stories, ideas, and leadership can thrive.

Rather than chasing representation for optics, Salaam Institute works to centre real voices, lived experience, and grounded leadership.

Its mission is to shift the conversation from inclusion as a gesture to inclusion as a structure—where Muslim Australians are not only heard, but leading the conversation.

What’s next

The next Salaam Institute event will be held on Wednesday 10 September 2025 at Gilbert + Tobin, Barangaroo, and will feature Professor George Williams, Vice-Chancellor and President of Western Sydney University.
