Phot0: From left – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Australian Minister Tony Burke.

Benjamin Netanyahu has gone on the attack. In a furious letter and media blitz, the Israeli Prime Minister branded Anthony Albanese a “weak leader” whose record is “forever tarnished” after Australia joined the growing list of nations recognising a Palestinian state.

He compared Albanese’s decision to the appeasement of Hitler before World War Two. He accused Australia of “pouring fuel on the anti-Semitic fire.” He railed against other leaders, including Emmanuel Macron, who have also recognised Palestine. His rhetoric was designed to intimidate, to silence, and to paint every act of solidarity with Palestinians as support for terrorism.

But Netanyahu’s rage cannot mask the reality of Israel’s policies.

Even as he hurls insults abroad, his government presses forward with expanding illegal settlements in the West Bank, including thousands of new housing units designed to slice Palestinian land into disconnected fragments.

In Gaza, his military has called up tens of thousands of reservists to continue a campaign that has already killed and displaced countless civilians. Entire families have been wiped out, children are starving, and famine looms.

This is not “strength.” It is cruelty dressed up as security. It is the deliberate erasure of a people’s right to exist.

Australia’s recognition of Palestine was not about Hamas, as Netanyahu claims.

The decision was about justice, peace, and the international community finally refusing to look away. Recognition is the first step toward dismantling an apartheid system built on occupation and despair.

And in the middle of Netanyahu’s fury came a moment of moral clarity. On Wednesday 20 August, Australian minister Tony Burke cut through the bluster with words that hit at the very core of Israel’s campaign:

“Strength is not measured by how many people you can blow up or how many children you can leave hungry.”

In one sentence, Burke exposed the obscenity of Netanyahu’s worldview. True strength lies in protecting the vulnerable, not in punishing them.

The diplomatic spat has already escalated.

Australia cancelled the visa of far-right Israeli politician Simcha Rothman. Israel retaliated by rescinding visas for Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority.

Netanyahu claims that world leaders recognising Palestine are weak. In truth, weakness lies in clinging to endless war, endless settlement expansion, and endless excuses for killing civilians.

History will not remember Albanese, Macron, or Burke as appeasers. The real appeasement is silence. Silence as Gaza is reduced to rubble. Silence as Palestinian land is stolen, one settlement at a time. Silence as children are starved in the name of “security.”

And the real weakness? It belongs to Netanyahu, who hides his brutality behind a mask of victimhood — even as his government wages one of the most devastating campaigns of oppression in modern history.
