The Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA) NT Chapter, in partnership with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, hosted a highly successful Blood Donation Drive on Friday 14 July 2023 in Darwin.

The event received overwhelming support from the local Islamic community, with enthusiastic participation from youth volunteers who played a crucial role in encouraging donations at various sites.

Adel Razi, Medical Student and Secretary of AIMA (NT), emphasized the urgent need for blood donations, revealing that one in three Australians would require blood at some point in their lives. Surprisingly, only one in 30 Australians currently donates blood.

He urged everyone to recognize the potential of each donor at the NT Blood Donation Drive to save up to three lives, making their participation a powerful act that could make a genuine difference.

Dr Sufyan Akram, Clinical Sciences Coordinator at the CDU Menzies School of Medicine and President of AIMA (NT) Chapter, underscored the responsibility of health professionals and community members to respond to the critical need for blood donations.

The collaboration with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service aimed to raise awareness and encourage individuals, particularly from the NT Islamic community, to step forward and contribute to this life-saving cause.

The Blood Donation Drive established donation sites across the Top End, at the Darwin Islamic Centre, Palmerston Mosque, and Darwin CBD Musalla. After the conclusion of jummah prayers, hundreds of people attended the stalls at these locations, sparking conversations and leading to actual donations.

At each site, the Imams took the opportunity to remind donors, including the youth volunteers, of the profound impact of saving a life, as emphasized in the teachings of the Quran.

Dr Sana Qadri, a local General Practitioner, further amplified the impact of the blood drive by joining ABC news radio to discuss the event and its significance for the local community. The radio campaign significantly increased awareness and encouraged more people to register as donors, highlighting the powerful impact of collective efforts.
