In our family, it had never been done before
to be with the dying in their last hours.
Then, one day, out of the blue, someone rang;
it was a nursing home attendant,
my mother, in a faraway city, was dying.
Would I like to say something?
Stunned, I did my best to comfort her;
“Soon, things for you will be much better;
your beloved brother, and brother in law, your mother
will be together again,”
And other words to soften the pain.
Thanks to a strangers attention
a woman was consoled by her son;
at the end, a kind of union.
