“And whoever saves a life it is as if they have saved mankind entirely.” (Quran 5:32)
AIMA WA branch hosted its very first medical graduate award ceremony on the Saturday 13 June, along with an Eid dinner for over 150 attendees.
This joint celebratory event welcomed our newly graduated doctors and their families to a larger community of senior doctors and healthcare workers who provided endless insight and advice throughout the night. This ranged from expectations, responsibilities, preserving patient dignity, mental health and the limitless nature of servitude to both humanity and God when practicing medicine.
A beautiful Quran recitation welcomed our attendees, followed by Dr Awais Qureshi’s opening speech in which he highlighted his journey throughout medical school and how to navigate entering the workforce in the first few years as a doctor.
Dr Fahad Janjua, the President of AIMA WA, also addressed the audience and gave a beautiful speech which reinforced the importance of community and the role of a doctor. He also highlighted the important work AIMA is doing in WA including Blood Donation Drives and Life Savers CPR course, demonstrating AIMA’s ongoing commitment to serving the community.
The graduation ceremony was presented by medical student Amro Shalan. With gifts presented to our graduating doctors Isha Sameer, Balsam Al Asedy, Maysam Al Asedy, Tasnia Nowshin, Jahin Anwar, Soondus Shoeib, Shaheera Ahmed , Munaaf Khan, Nouman Tahir. All who have successfully been interning across Western Australian hospitals.
Following the award ceremony Dr Syed Muhammad Hamid gave an extremely thought-provoking speech on why excelling in different careers is encouraged as a muslim. That we should look beyond just becoming medical practitioners, that understanding and studying deen can go hand in hand, as it did for many great scholars of the past.
He quoted Imam Al-Shafi, “Knowledge is of two kinds: knowledge of religion and knowledge of medicine and the body”, emphasising the importance of what these young graduates have achieved and that we all must continue to seek knowledge in more than just a single field.
The guests then got a chance to participate in a kahoot organised by our student committee with prizes for the winners. A delicious buffet dinner and desserts were then served while guests got a chance to converse and network.
With every speaker, it was clear that the shared experiences of being in a field like medicine and healthcare directly poured into every aspect of one’s life, and that managing this responsibility came from leaning on your community and Creator.
At the heart of the event was a message that resonated with many of the guests, a message that recognised the power and impact we can have on one another and our communities when we choose to commit and respond to the call of medicine.
A special thanks to the AIMA WA team and everyone who helped make this event possible. A first of its kind event, the Medical Graduate Award Ceremony celebrated and highlighted the endless possibilities our new graduates had before them, and the excitement of this lifelong journey they’re embarking on.
May Allah place barakah in their paths and make them a source of peace and healing for the Ummah.
