Salaam Institute hosted an intimate and thought-provoking evening in Sydney on Thursday 27 November with Professor Khalil (Charlie) Shahin AO, bringing together members of the Australian Muslim community for a candid conversation on leadership, faith, and legacy.

Charlie Shahin’s story is well known. From arriving in Australia as a refugee to building the Peregrine Corporation into one of the country’s largest privately owned businesses, his journey is remarkable.

Yet what resonated most with those in attendance was not the scale of his success, but the way he spoke about values, responsibility, and staying grounded in faith while navigating complex commercial environments.

Throughout the discussion, Charlie reflected openly on the realities of leadership. He spoke about decision making, the importance of long term thinking, and the role family and faith have played in shaping his approach to business and life.

His honesty struck a chord with many in the room, particularly younger professionals and entrepreneurs who often grapple with how to pursue ambition without losing sight of who they are.

The evening also touched on broader questions faced by the Muslim community. How do we define success? What does ethical leadership look like in practice? And how can faith inform, rather than limit, our contribution to wider society? These were not theoretical discussions, but reflections grounded in lived experience, shared with humility and clarity.

Events like this reflect the core purpose of Salaam Institute. The Institute was established to create meaningful spaces for conversation, learning, and connection within the Australian Muslim community.

By bringing community members into direct dialogue with leaders such as Charlie Shahin, Salaam Institute helps demystify leadership and make pathways to success feel both accessible and authentic.

The impact of these gatherings extends well beyond the room. For many attendees, hearing from someone who has navigated challenges at the highest levels without compromising their values offers reassurance and confidence. It reinforces the idea that faith and professional success are not at odds, and that principled leadership has a place in every sector.

Just as importantly, Salaam Institute events foster connection across generations.

By connecting the community with leaders who embody integrity, resilience, and service, Salaam Institute plays an important role in shaping narratives of confidence and contribution. These conversations help ensure that the next generation of leaders is not only ambitious, but grounded in purpose and responsibility.

As the evening concluded, there was a shared sense that these conversations matter. They inspire reflection, encourage action, and remind the community of its capacity to lead with both conviction and compassion.

They bring together people with shared values but different journeys, creating a sense of collective reflection and momentum. In doing so, they strengthen the social fabric of the community and encourage thoughtful engagement with the world beyond it.
