This Ramadan, a unique wave of inspiration is sweeping through Queenstown, New Zealand, thanks to MyFundAction New Zealand, a youth-driven charity that’s all about empowering the next generation.

The organisation has brought in Imam Abdullah Azzam, a young Malaysian scholar currently studying at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, to lead prayers, share knowledge, and engage with both Muslims and non-Muslims in the local community.

His presence has sparked something special—not just in the mosque, but in the hearts of young people who are looking for purpose, belonging, and deeper faith.

“It’s been amazing to see young people step up,” said Imam Abdullah Azzam . “They’re not just attending events, but they’re organising, learning, and becoming leaders in their own right. MYDC Queenstown has done a wonderful job, especially in developing youth and bringing together people from different backgrounds. It’s truly an amazing centre with so much potential.”

With the help of youth volunteers, MyFundAction is hosting daily iftar gatherings in collaboration with The Komunal Cafe, a Malaysian-owned local eatery.

These iftars aren’t just about food, they’re a space where people of all backgrounds come together to experience Ramadhan and ask questions about Islam in a warm, welcoming setting.

The youth-led spirit also carried through to the Halal Exhibition, where Imam Abdullah gave simple, down-to-earth explanations about halal practices, about why they matter, how they’re tied to ethics and wellbeing, and what they mean for Muslims living in multicultural societies like New Zealand.

Copies of the Qur’an were also distributed to new Muslims and visitors curious about the religion.

“Every Qur’an we give out is a small spark. Sometimes that’s all it takes to start someone’s journey,” shared a local volunteer.

What’s most powerful is how the program is being driven by youth for youth.

MyFundAction’s mission is clear: to develop confident, compassionate, and capable young Muslims who can make a positive impact wherever they are.

Imam Abdullah’s time in Queenstown has shown just how far one individual and one community can go when the youth are at the centre of change.

Through spiritual leadership, shared meals, open dialogue, and heartfelt service, this Ramadan has become a reminder that the future of the ummah is in good hands.
