Sarcopenia otherwise known as involuntary muscle loss accelerates in woman heading in towards their perimenopausal years, ranging from late 30’s to early 40’s.

Losing muscle is a big deal as it means we don’t have as much strength and muscle to be able to things that you do in your day to day living comfortably.

It also can lead to insulin resistance, bone loss (osteoporosis) and even  heart disease and diabetes.

Research shows that a women who are not active and do not incorporate strength training during their perimenopausal years can lose 1% of muscle mass each year leading up to menopause.

so if women go through 10 years of perimenopause ( can vary woman to woman between 4-10 years) then that would mean they would lose 10% of their muscle mass by the time they are at menopause.

It is strongly recommended to incorporate two strength training per week for at least 30mins incorporating as much compound exercises as possible as well as daily movement/walks for woman in all stages of menopause. (pre-menopause, menopause and post-menopause).

Key takeaway: Strength training is vital for woman’s longevity and if you haven’t already started no matter what stage you are, start strength training now.
