The Demanding Desert Man

One day, the Prophet (s) was walking with young Anas (r) – his loyal servant. The Prophet (s) was wearing a simple cloak which had a rough edge.

The Prophet (s) did not wear fancy clothes like powerful leaders usually do – he lived a simple life.

All of a sudden, a Bedouin (someone who lives in the desert) man came up behind the Prophet (s), to hold of the shawl and pulled it with great force.

He pulled it so hard that the edge of the garment left marks on the neck of the Prophet (s)!

Imagine how angry you would be if somebody did that to you!

Not only that, the man then rudely exclaimed, “Muhammad!”

He then said,
“Order them (your Companions) to give me something from Allah’s money which you have!”

The Prophet (s) turned to him and smiled warmly! He then asked one of his  Companions to give some money to this Bedouin.

Narrate the beautiful story of the forbearance of the Prophet (s) and ask your children/students these questions.

  • What would you have done if the Bedouin had done that to you?
  • ‎What do we learn about the Prophet (s) from this story?
  • ‎What can you do next time someone does something to make you angry?
