In a fascinating convergence of ancient wisdom and modern science, the Holy Quran has once again proven its timelessness by accurately describing details about honey bees that have only recently been confirmed by entomologists. A recent discovery has shed light on the fact that honey is produced exclusively by female bees—also known as worker bees—while male bees do not partake in honey production. What is even more astounding is that this intricate detail was already mentioned in the Quran over 1400 years ago.
The verse in question is from Surah An-Nahl (The Bee), where Allah says:
“And your Lord inspired the bees: ‘Make your homes in the mountains, the trees, and in what people construct. Then feed from ˹the flower of˺ any fruit you please and follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you.’ From their bellies comes forth liquid of varying colors, in which there is healing for people. Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect.” (Quran 16:68-69).
This Quranic verse not only illustrates the natural habitat and behaviors of honey bees but also uses specific feminine grammatical forms in Arabic to describe the actions of the bees, such as building their hives and foraging. This detail, which might seem trivial at first, points directly to the fact that these roles are carried out by female bees.
McKay Orton, a professional beekeeper with a background in entomology and over a decade of experience, recently expressed her astonishment at the precision of the Quran’s depiction of honey bee behaviour. Currently pursuing a Master Beekeeper certification at Cornell University, she shared her findings in a video where she read the translated verses from the Quran, expressing admiration for its profound respect and detailed knowledge of bees.
Orton noted three key points that stood out to her:
Healing Properties of Honey: The Quran highlights honey’s medicinal value, referring to it as a liquid of “varying colors” with healing properties. This aligns with modern scientific findings that validate honey’s antimicrobial and therapeutic benefits.
Role of Female Bees: The Quran uses feminine pronouns and verbs to describe the actions of honey bees, which was confirmed much later by scientists. Female worker bees are responsible for all major activities in the hive, including building, foraging, and honey production. This discovery in the 19th century by Edward Bevan and others only underscores the miraculous nature of the Quranic revelation.
Ecological Significance: Orton appreciated how the Quran encourages the preservation and respect of nature, considering it a sin to harm bees. This message resonates deeply with the current global efforts to protect bee populations, which are crucial pollinators in our ecosystems.
It is remarkable to note that the Quran’s description extends to the anatomical details of bees as well. The Quran mentions that bees have multiple stomachs, a fact that modern science has confirmed. Female bees have two stomachs—one for digesting food and another for storing nectar, which is later used to produce honey. This was unknown to the scientific community until a few centuries ago, yet it was recorded in the Quran centuries earlier.
Furthermore, the Quranic verse also refers to bees building their homes in various locations, such as mountains and trees, which modern science has expanded to include rare bee species that build nests in wood and even solid rocks.
The Quran’s mention of these intricate details raises profound questions about the source of this knowledge. How could Prophet Muhammad (s), an illiterate man living in the 7th century, possess such advanced scientific knowledge? This has led many, including Orton, to reflect on the extraordinary nature of the Quran and its message.
As science continues to uncover the mysteries of the natural world, the Quran stands as a timeless testament to divine knowledge, providing guidance and insights that continue to resonate and astonish. May this newfound understanding inspire further reflection on the Quran’s profound wisdom and encourage the preservation and respect of the natural world, as advocated by its teachings.
“We will show them Our signs in the universe and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that this Quran is the truth.” (Quran 41:53).
