Mohammed Nehan, an Afghan refugee who arrived in Australia over 30 years ago seeking asylum and a fresh start, has been awarded the title of Best Herb and Vegetable Garden in the Link Wentworth Growing Communities Gardening Competition.
Mohammed’s journey from adversity to abundance demonstrates the transformative power of gardening in fostering resilience, community engagement, and cultural preservation.
Fleeing conflict and uncertainty in his homeland, Mohammed found solace and purpose in cultivating a garden reminiscent of the lush landscapes of Afghanistan.
Settling in Marsfield Park, Mohammed transformed his home into a sanctuary of greenery, establishing a vibrant “vegetable jungle” with his wife, brimming with trees, flowers, and vegetables native to both Afghanistan and Australia.
Mohammed said, “Gardening is more than just a hobby; it allows me to create a sense of home in my newfound land of Australia. By sharing my gardening knowledge and produce with neighbours and friends, I’ve made connections with the many others who also now call Australia their home.”
The Link Wentworth Gardening Competition is an annual event which aims to promote gardening as a means of improving mental health, fostering community engagement, and beautifying living spaces within social and affordable housing complexes.
With a variety of award categories, the competition caters to different gardening interests and skill levels, encouraging participation from a diverse range of residents.
Andrew McAnulty, Link Wentworth CEO, said, “Participating in the gardening competition offers residents a therapeutic outlet for reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. It also empowers residents to take ownership of their living environments and contributes to a sense of pride and ownership in their living spaces.”
By providing opportunities for residents to engage in gardening activities and showcase their achievements, the competition contributes to creating vibrant, supportive, and resilient communities.
For Mohammed, his story serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the power of community, culture, and compassion in overcoming adversity and cultivating a brighter future for generations to come.
