The Lebanese Muslim Association hosted close to 500 guests at a special graduation ceremony in Lakemba on Saturday 16 December for participants in its 2023 Arabic learning courses.

The LMA conducts these courses every year, showing its commitment to fostering linguistic and cultural understanding.

Six campuses across southwest Sydney were involved in 2023: Belmore Boys High School, Belmore Public School, Punchbowl Public School, Sefton High School, Prestons Public School and Mount Pritchard Public School.

Last Saturday’s special ceremony was facilitated by the LMA’s board of directors to recognise high-achieving participants in these classes.

“We reinitiated the graduation ceremony on this scale in 2022 when around 500 people attended and this year’s event attracted similar numbers, comprising principals, teachers, students and their loved ones and other special guests,” LMA director Mohammed Daher told AMUST.

“Arabic was the language chosen by Allah when He revealed The Quran to Prophet Muhammad (s) over 23 years and it is crucial for every Muslim to learn Arabic, in order to be able to fully understand and practise their religion.”

“And if a student is interested in studying or working in a field where fluent Arabic is required, obviously courses such as those run by the LMA’s Arabic learning colleges are also invaluable.”

Mr Daher praised the loved ones of the students for supporting the graduation ceremony so strongly.

“Given the success of the new format of the graduation ceremony last year, we were expecting a healthy roll-up of proud parents and other relatives and friends to celebrate the students’ achievements but these numbers have exceeded our expectations by far.”

The graduation ceremony not only served as a platform to honour academic accomplishments but also reinforced the importance of linguistic and cultural education within the Muslim community.

The LMA  continues to play a vital role in promoting learning, understanding and unity through its educational initiatives and as the graduates embark on their future endeavours, these ceremonies stand as a testament to the power of education in fostering a deeper connection to our heritage and our faith for students of all ages.
