The AIMA-WA Student Branch organised an engaging “get to know us” sundowner event on Thursday 10 August 2023 to create a vibrant platform for Muslim medical and allied health students in Western Australia facilitating learning more about AIMA, active engagement with the organisation, and connections with like-minded peers.

Dr Abubakr Hussain, a Perth-based General practitioner and Secretary of AIMA WA, along with Munaaf Khan, a fourth-year medical student from the University of Western Australia, extended a warm welcome to all attendees and briefly introduced the event’s purpose.

Dr Abubakr elaborated on AIMA’s impactful public health awareness and community engagement campaigns conducted in the past. These initiatives included CPR training sessions in masjids, Islamic centres, and blood donation drives.

He further explained that AIMA provides numerous networking opportunities for senior and junior clinicians and students across diverse medical and surgical specialties in various states and territories of Australia.

Munaaf, as the President of the AIMA-WA’s student wing, emphasised the significance of participation and encouraged Muslim medical and health profession students to embrace AIMA’s vision, goals, and objectives.

His vision is to create a platform for Muslim medical and health science students across Western Australia that will enable them to network, cultivate leadership skills, and find mentors who can guide their healthcare journey.

The AIMA WA student committee facilitated various group activities designed to foster camaraderie among attendees. One such activity was the “speed friending bingo,” a lighthearted icebreaker encouraging participants to engage in conversations and cross off items on their bingo cards.

Moreover, a group quiz was organised to provide an interactive setting for attendees to discover more about AIMA’s offerings and gain insights into the organisation.

The event culminated with tasty food and beverages provided by the AIMA WA student committee and generously sponsored by the AIMA WA committee.

The gathering took place at UWA’s eZone and concluded with a valuable opportunity for attendees to interact individually with representatives from the student team.

During this time, attendees could glean more insights on how to become further connected with the organisation. An exciting announcement was made about the upcoming WA student event – a panel discussion for students and junior doctors inspired by the successful AIMA NSW student/JMO event.

With an impressive turnout of around 70 students, the event achieved great success, largely owing to the dedicated efforts of the WA student committee members: Arfa Malik, Nehel Syed, Rasheeka Usman, Zahin Khan, Maysam Al-Asedy, Syed Yousaf, Fezaan Sheikh, and Dabeer Shikrani.
