In collaboration with Human Appeal Australia, 10 MFIS learners travelled to Indonesia from Thursday 11 to Tuesday 16 December 2025 to support the construction of a masjid and two classrooms, responding directly to the educational and spiritual needs of a local community.

They were accompanied by four teachers: Sheikh Fawaz Kamaz, Mr Omar Merheb, Mr Mohamed Omar (Secondary Teacher), and Mr Muhamed Saeed (Wellbeing Coordinator). The project benefitted a community of almost 1,000 people, with the school itself catering for over 300 students.

MFIS Year 12 learners turn Ramadan fundraiser into action in Indonesia

Malek Fahd Islamic School continues to demonstrate its commitment to faith, service and global citizenship through this  humanitarian initiative led by its Year 12 learners.

This project is the follow-up to the [Greenacre Secondary] 🌙 Year 12 Fundraiser Iftar – Build Your House in Jannah 🕌 held on 18 March 2025. During the Iftar, the learners raised $25,000, with an additional $10,000 contributed by the students themselves over the following months.

After seven months of fundraising and planning, the project is now in action, bringing the vision of the Iftar fundraiser to life.

A project rooted in faith and purpose

The decision to support the construction of a masjid and classrooms was intentional. These spaces serve as foundations for community growth. A masjid provides a place for worship, unity and spiritual strength. Classrooms provide opportunity, stability and access to learning for future generations.

The significance of building a masjid is well established in Islamic teachings. The Prophet Muhammad (s) said, “Whoever builds a masjid for the sake of Allah, Allah will build for them a house in Jannah.” This hadith, reported in both Bukhari and Muslim, highlights the lasting reward tied to supporting places of worship.

Education also holds a central place in Islam. The Prophet (s) taught that seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim. By supporting the construction of classrooms, MFIS learners directly contributed to fulfilling this obligation, creating spaces where children can learn, grow and build better futures.

Learners leading through service

MFIS Year 12 learners approached this project with sincerity and responsibility. They understood that leadership is not limited to words or titles. It is reflected through action. Throughout the journey, learners worked alongside local partners, observed the realities faced by the community, and contributed to a solution that will benefit families for years to come.

This experience allowed learners to step outside their comfort zones. They engaged with a different culture, formed connections with local families, and developed a deeper understanding of global responsibility. These moments reinforced empathy, gratitude and awareness, values that MFIS actively nurtures across all campuses.

Guidance and support on the journey

The learners were accompanied by four teachers, each providing guidance and support. Sheikh Fawaz (School Chaplain) offered spiritual mentorship and daily reminders on intention and humility. Mr Omar Merheb (Head of Campus – Greenacre Secondary) and Mr Mohamed Omar (Secondary Teacher) provided pastoral and organisational support, ensuring the learners’ safety and wellbeing throughout the trip. Mr Muhamed Saeed (Wellbeing Coordinator) contributed practical guidance and emotional support during the build, helping learners understand teamwork and resilience in action.

Reflecting on the project, Sheikh Fawaz Kamaz said, “It is inspiring to see our learners channel their faith into action. They have built more than structures; they have built hope and connection for a community that welcomed them wholeheartedly.”

Mr Omar Merheb added, “Alhamdulillah, a rewarding day with a community of almost 1,000 people, and a school catering for over 300 students. The learners’ commitment and energy have left a lasting impact, both spiritually and educationally.”

This trip has been a blessing and an eye opening experience for the team involved, both organisers and participants. To be able to celebrate the end of a schooling journey in the service of members of our Ummah who we have no other connection with apart from ‘La ilaha illa Allah’ is a testament to the embedded service culture within our school. A community welcome and heartfelt inauguration

Inauguration Day at Al Azkia School, Tenjolaya Bogor with Human Appeal Australia.

The completion of the masjid and classrooms was marked by a heartfelt inauguration ceremony attended by local families and community members. The event brought together a community of almost 1,000 people, including parents, children and elders, who welcomed MFIS and Human Appeal Australia with warmth and gratitude.

The inauguration was deeply moving. Prayers were shared, speeches were made, and smiles were exchanged. Families expressed appreciation for the support and solidarity shown by the visiting learners. The masjid and classrooms now stand as symbols of unity, faith and shared purpose.

This ceremony highlighted the power of collaboration. Different cultures and backgrounds came together with one intention: to serve, support and uplift the community.

A lasting impact beyond the build

Masjid and Classrooms in operation.

While the physical structures are complete, the impact of this initiative extends far beyond bricks and mortar. Learners returned with renewed perspective, stronger faith and a clearer understanding of their role as global citizens.

For the Indonesian community, the masjid offers a space for worship and connection. The classrooms offer children a chance to learn in a safe and supportive environment. These spaces will continue to benefit families long after the learners have returned home.

This initiative reflects the strength of partnerships built on shared values. MFIS and Human Appeal Australia demonstrated how education, faith and humanitarian work can come together to create meaningful change.

Living the MFIS values

This journey stands as a powerful example of MFIS learners living the school’s values beyond the classroom. It reinforces the importance of service learning and shows how young people can contribute positively to the world when given the opportunity and guidance.

As these Year 12 learners prepare to graduate, they leave behind a legacy of compassion, leadership and action. One that reflects the true spirit of education rooted in faith and service.
