Australia is home to one of the most diverse Muslim communities in the world, with believers from over 60 different countries calling this land home. While their languages and cultures may differ, a shared foundation binds them all — the guidance of the Qur’an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (s). Among many values, one profound message stands out: care for the land you live on.

A divine trust
The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes that the Earth is not just a resource but a trust (Amanah) given to humanity:

“He brought you forth from the earth and settled you therein…” (Quran 11:61)

This verse affirms that wherever a person lives whether in the Arabian desert or the vast Australian outback they are divinely entrusted to care for that land. For Muslims living in Australia, this means treating the land with respect, preserving its natural beauty, and promoting sustainability.

Avoiding harm and injustice
Another significant command from the Qur’an is:

“And do not cause corruption upon the earth after its reformation.” (Quran 7:56)

Corruption here extends beyond moral decay to include pollution, deforestation, and destruction of natural habitats. In a country like Australia, with9 its delicate ecosystems and frequent bushfires, this command encourages Muslims to actively support conservation efforts and climate responsibility.

The Prophet’s example
Prophet Muhammad (s) practiced what the Qur’an preached. In a famous Hadith, he said:

“If the Hour (Day of Judgement) is about to be established and one of you has a palm shoot in his hand, then he should plant it.” (Hadith, Musnad Ahmad, 12491)

This powerful message reinforces the importance of hope and environmental stewardship—even in the face of global crisis. Another Hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim emphasises sustainable water use, a critical issue in arid Australian regions:

“Do not waste water, even if you are at a running stream.” (Hadith, Muslim)

Relevance in Australia

Australian Muslims have already begun embracing these teachings through tree-planting events, community cleanups, and interfaith sustainability programs.

Organisations like Islamic Relief Australia and Green Muslims Australia work to align faith with ecological action.
In a land marked by stunning natural beauty from the Great Barrier Reef to the sacred Uluru Islamic principles offer a spiritual and ethical framework for living in harmony with the environment.

This isn’t just about religion; it’s about shared values that all Australians can appreciate.

Islam’s environmental message is clear: the land is a gift, and with it comes great responsibility. By embracing this guidance, Muslims in Australia and their fellow citizens can help build a future rooted in respect, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
