AIMA NSW hosted its Careers Day event on Saturday 18 July 2026, featuring a host of senior medical practitioners from a variety of fields, giving them the opportunity to pass down their wealth of knowledge and experience to the next generation of Muslim medical practitioners.
Held at the University of Notre Dame Auburn Clinical School, the program featured four keynote speakers. Dr Affan Guliyara (Gastroenterology) offered a detailed overview of Basic Physician Training (BPT) pathways, while Dr Asim Shah (Intensive Care) reflected on his journey through critical care medicine.
Dr Faruque Riffat (Otolaryngology/ENT Surgery) provided insight into surgical training pathways, and Dr Mohammed Naushad-Uddin shared perspectives from his career in General Practice.
In addition, a broad representation of clinicians from specialties including Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anaesthetics, Urology, Orthopaedics, Endocrinology, and Psychiatry were present, enriching the diversity of perspectives available to attendees.
The event commenced with a tarbiya (setting of intention) delivered by Brother Omar, President of the AIMA Student Wing. He reflected on a well-known hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (s), drawing on the parable of the seller of musk and the blacksmith to emphasise the importance of righteous companionship and the qualities we should strive to embody within our own circles.
This was followed by an engaging and light-hearted interactive session, where specialists responded to casual questions using mini whiteboards. This activity offered attendees an accessible and candid glimpse into the lived realities of different specialties.
The keynote sessions then proceeded, with each speaker sharing their personal journey, outlining the demands and expectations of their respective fields, and offering practical guidance for navigating training pathways and future applications.
The day concluded with a delicious lunch provided by Last Slice, creating an opportunity for attendees to engage directly with speakers and clinicians. Participants were able to ask questions, seek advice, and build meaningful professional connections, both with established doctors and their peers.
Alhamdulillah the Careers Day provided a valuable platform for the transfer of knowledge, experience, and mentorship to the next generation of Muslim medical professionals, and the Student/JMO Wing would like to thank all the Doctors who gave their time to speak and share their experiences, and everyone who participated.
