On Saturday July 25, House of Sadaqa will once again take over Mahon Pool at Maroubra Beach for its 3rd Annual Charity Winter Plunge – and the community is being called to get involved.
What started back in 2024 as a bold idea has quickly become one of the Sydney Muslim community’s most innovative and challenging events.
The premise hasn’t changed: get sponsored, then jump into icy water and raise vital funds for families doing it tough.
Rob Bilal Laidlaw founded House of Sadaqa from his Castle Hill garage back in 2010 and the charity has grown exponentially ever since, now operating out of a warehouse in Revesby and touching thousands of lives around the world.
“There’s something about jumping into freezing water that breaks down every barrier,” Mr Laidlaw told AMUST.

“When you’re standing on that pool deck about to take the plunge, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you do – you’re all in it together, and you’re doing it for those in need.”
Participants can sign up as individuals or pull together a team through a workplace, school, sporting club, mosque or community organisation.
Businesses are also encouraged to use the event to show their community colours while supporting a genuine local cause.
“We want this to be bigger and bolder than ever,” Laidlaw said.
“Every dollar raised will go directly to families who need a hand – that’s what House of Sadaqa is about.”

House of Sadaqa has done magnificent work to help the vulnerable both locally and overseas for the past 16 years and if you don’t mind the cold (or even if you do!) , this event is well worth your participation.
