In our community’s ongoing fight against homelessness, the recent 2024 Mayor’s Lights Out Sleep Out stood as a powerful testament to solidarity and compassion. Held on the 18th of July at Belmore Sports Ground, this event, coordinated by the City of Canterbury-Bankstown, in collaboration with Brothers In Need, Maronites on Mission and Mission Australia, successfully brought together participants and supporters for a cause that touches the hearts of many.
The Lights Out Sleep Out was more than a symbolic gesture—it was a concrete effort to address the issue of homelessness. With participants, including Mayor Bilal El-Hayek, myself and a dedicated group of individuals, spending the night outdoors, the event not only raised awareness but also fostered a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those without stable housing.
We are deeply grateful for the commitment of the following participants, who generously contributed their time and effort:
- Adam Ismail
- Sam El Malti
- Rodney Masri
- Nour Saraya
- Hassanein Saraya
- Emad Raad
- Mohamed Oukna
- Ziad Jawad
- Waqas Shiraz Mohammad
- Esra Kandas
- Nasoor
- Tameem
- Hamza
- Muhammed-Ali
Their dedication, alongside the support of our generous donors, made the event a resounding success. Thanks to the community’s efforts, we have so far raised an impressive $5,167. These funds will significantly enhance our outreach programs, providing essential resources such as hygiene packs, and expanding our Mobile Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen initiatives. Our goal is to uphold the dignity of those in need and ensure they have regular access to nutritious meals and pantry items.
The support we received demonstrates the power of collective action and the impact of community solidarity. Every donation helps us provide freshly made meals, fruits, desserts, and pantry items, directly benefiting those who are most vulnerable in our community.

In line with Islamic teachings, which emphasise the importance of helping those in need within our local community, our efforts were driven by a deep commitment to making a tangible difference. It is through such acts of kindness and generosity that we continue to nourish souls and uplift communities.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported this important cause, whether through participation, donations, or spreading awareness. Your generosity and commitment are what drive our mission forward, spreading hope and kindness to those who need it most.
Thank you for making a meaningful impact and supporting the fight against homelessness.
