More than 300 guests gathered for the 2026 Annual Dinner hosted by Multicultural Social Network Inc (MSN) on Sunday 31 May 2026 at the Gold Coast Islamic Community Centre, an evening dedicated to celebrating volunteerism, multiculturalism and community service across Queensland.
Now in its eighth year, the annual event has become a significant fixture on the Gold Coast’s multicultural calendar, bringing together government representatives, community leaders, volunteers, business supporters and members of diverse cultural communities.
This year’s dinner welcomed 34 dignitaries from federal, state and local sectors, reflecting the growing recognition of the important role multicultural organisations play in building stronger and more inclusive communities.
Hosted by MSN Founder and President Dr Hussain Baba, the evening highlighted the contributions of volunteers whose dedication and commitment have positively impacted the lives of many Queenslanders.
Throughout the night, speakers emphasised the importance of service, social cohesion and community participation in fostering harmony across culturally diverse communities.
A major highlight of the event was the presentation of the 2026 MSN Volunteer Awards.
The awards were presented by Queensland Minister for Multiculturalism Fiona Simpson and Queensland Police Commissioner Brett Pointing, who both acknowledged the vital contribution volunteers make in strengthening communities and encouraging engagement among people from different cultural backgrounds.
The evening also provided an opportunity to reflect on MSN’s achievements over the past year and its broader contribution to Queensland society.
Federal Senator Paul Scarr praised the organisation’s volunteer-driven programs, particularly its support for vulnerable community members, people experiencing hardship and those affected by emergencies and natural disasters.
Senator Scarr highlighted MSN’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the organisation provided essential support to more than 200 international students who had lost employment and were unable to access government assistance.
He commended the dedication of volunteers whose efforts continue to make a meaningful difference in communities throughout Queensland.
Another significant moment during the evening was the presentation of the Islamic Society of Gold Coast Appreciation Award to the Queensland Police Service on the Gold Coast.
The award was accepted by Assistant Police Commissioner Chris Hodgman in recognition of the strong partnership between local police and community organisations, and their shared commitment to promoting community safety and social harmony.
The 2026 MSN Volunteer Award recipients included Nasrin Vaziri, Raj Kumar, Diane Kozic, Ellen Peru, Patrice Poutu, Warren Taylor, Seema Chauhan, Zain Baba, Debby Lo-Dean, Endang Setyorini and Andy Rajapakse.
Amin’s Restaurant received the Organisation Award for its ongoing support of community programs and multicultural engagement, while Lela MacDowell was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her decades of dedicated service and leadership.
As the evening concluded, guests reflected on the collective efforts of volunteers, community organisations and supporters who continue to build bridges across cultures and create opportunities for people from all backgrounds to connect, contribute and thrive.
The event served as a powerful reminder that volunteerism remains one of the strongest foundations for creating inclusive, resilient and united communities.
