On Monday 9 March, I had the privilege of hosting the Lebanese Muslim Association’s inaugural New Muslims’ Iftar in the Events Hall of the LMA Services Building, next door to Lakemba Mosque, in Sydney’s southwest.

The evening proved to be a truly blessed gathering focused on welcoming and supporting those who have embraced Islam.

Around 90 people attended, including close to 70 new Muslim brothers and sisters.

They were joined by Lakemba Mosque’s principal imam, Sheikh Yahya Safi, along with LMA board members, staff and community guests.

The program began with a beautiful Qur’an recitation from internationally known Qāri’ Sheikh Mohamed Harby, followed by a timely reminder by Sheikh Jamal Ud-Din El-Kiki focusing on the unique journey and challenges faced by new Muslims.

One of the highlights of the evening was hearing from Cooke Islander revert Pukz Ngatikaura, who shared his personal journey to Islam with warmth and sincerity.

Fellow Cooke Islander, social media influencer and da’wah figure brother Musa Stranger (who also converted to Islam many years ago) delivered an important message about the importance of new Muslims remaining closely connected to the community.

“The best ways for New Muslims to connect are by attending classes and study circles and less formal gatherings with other Muslims,” he told the audience.

“These opportunities help build knowledge, friendship and a real sense of belonging.”

Experience shows that when new Muslims struggle or drift away, it often happens within the first 12 months, usually because they don’t have that support and connection.

The evening also reflected the generosity of the wider community.

New LMA board member Hajj Ali Samad kindly provided thoughtful gifts for attendees, while many LMA team members worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the event possible.

I would also like to acknowledge the support of LMA President Hafez Alameddine, Secretary Gamel Kheir and the LMA board for backing new da’wah initiatives such as this Iftar and the Brothers’ Circle program.
