The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) is appalled and outraged at the latest reports from Gaza, where Palestinian civilians are being shot dead as they wait in line for food and humanitarian aid, while others, including infants, continue to die of starvation.
AFIC rejects outright the notion that this is simply a “humanitarian crisis”, as though it were the result of a natural disaster or unavoidable tragedy.
This is a deliberate strategy of starvation, deprivation and terror, carried out by Israel, supported by the United States and its allies, and condoned by the ongoing silence and inaction of much of the international community.
“Children are dying of hunger. Babies are dying of thirst. Civilians are being shot dead just for trying to get bread. To call this anything but genocide is a disgrace,” said Dr Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC.
“Every politician who still calls this ‘complicated,’ every media outlet that hides behind talk of ‘balance,’ and every government that remains silent, all of them, are complicit in this horror. History will remember their hypocrisy and cowardice.”
AFIC reiterates its demand that the Australian Government, and all nations that claim to uphold international law, take immediate and tangible steps to hold Israel accountable and end this atrocity.
Words of concern are not enough while people starve to death and are gunned down in the streets. This is not about race, or religion, this is about humanity, justice, and the basic right to live.
