With the passing of Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Australian Muslim leaders offered condolences to the global Catholic community and all those who revered him as a spiritual leader.
As the leader of over a billion Catholics worldwide, Pope Francis was a prominent voice in the moral and ethical discourse. He was known for his humility, his consistent advocacy for the poor and the marginalised, and his unwavering support for justice and peace.
Notably, Pope Francis spoke firmly against the occupation and suffering of the Palestinian people, calling for dignity, freedom and the protection of all civilians regardless of faith.
“The passing of Pope Francis is a moment of reflection for people of all faiths,” said Dr Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC. “He was a global figure who spoke out strongly against injustice, war, and the abuse of power. In particular, his concern for the Palestinian people and his consistent opposition to oppression was something that resonated across communities of conscience.”
He further added, “At a time of global instability, AFIC affirms the importance of continued interfaith respect and dialogue. The world is in need of moral leadership that upholds justice, compassion, and the inherent dignity of all people.”
