On Friday 22 November 2024, the Melbourne Grand Masjid (MGM) became the centre of a landmark event, hosting Victoria Police’s second-ever recruitment and information session at a mosque. This significant initiative, in collaboration with the Australian Community Development Program (ACDP) and MGM leadership, reinforced the shared commitment to diversity, inclusion, and the empowerment of Australia’s multicultural communities.
The session followed the resounding success of last year’s inaugural event, further cementing the partnership between Victoria Police and the Muslim community. It also showcased how collaboration can pave the way for meaningful engagement and foster a deeper sense of belonging among underrepresented groups.
Opening pathways to policing
The recruitment session at MGM was more than an event; it was a platform to inspire and inform. Attendees, drawn from various cultural and educational backgrounds, explored the vast opportunities within Victoria Police. From roles as police officers, protective services officers (PSOs), and police custody officers (PCOs), the presentation emphasised Victoria Police’s inclusivity and career versatility.
Victoria Police offers competitive salary packages were a key highlight, being paid to train from day one, Police Officer recruits are paid a salary of $55,995, and after swearing in as a Probationary Constable at the end of week 12, Officers will earn $76,927 per annum, plus allowances.
Attendees also learned about the generous benefits, including nine weeks of annual leave, flexible work arrangements, and salary packaging for superannuation. For those considering country policing, additional perks such as relocation assistance, tax breaks, and remote allowances made the roles even more appealing.
Primrose and Bridget from Victoria Police’s Talent Attraction team delivered an engaging and motivational presentation, addressing queries with transparency and inspiring attendees to envision careers with Victoria Police. For more information, please visit https://www.police.vic.gov.au/careers
Leadership and diversity in action
Senior Sergeant Maha Sukkar APM, a trailblazer in her own right, brought further inspiration to the event. As the first Muslim policewoman in Victoria to wear a hijab, she has long been an advocate for diversity and inclusion in law enforcement. Her journey, from founding the Victoria Police Muslim Association (VPMA) to co-founding the Victoria Police, Women of Colour Network, continues to break barriers.
Senior Sergeant Sukkar voiced her support for more women-focused initiatives, announcing plans for exclusive Q&A sessions aimed at encouraging female candidates to join the force. Her presence and message resonated strongly, showcasing the possibilities when diverse voices are empowered within traditionally uniform institutions.

The power of collaboration
The event’s success would not have been possible without the steadfast support of MGM’s leadership, including President Abdul Shakoor, Vice President Imran Khan, and the committee. Their commitment to fostering unity and community growth played a pivotal role in ensuring the event’s impact.
This partnership between Victoria Police and ACDP exemplifies how collaboration can transform communities. By bridging gaps and encouraging people from all walks of life to consider careers in law enforcement, this initiative strengthens the fabric of society.
ACDP’s mission of “building trust, breaking down barriers, and shaping a future where inclusivity and representation are central values” was at the heart of this event. It is not just about recruitment; it is about empowering individuals, fostering mutual understanding, and creating a society where everyone feels valued and represented.
As the partnership continues to evolve, this initiative serves as a beacon for what is possible when communities and institutions work together to build a more connected and empowered Australia. Stay tuned for more updates as ACDP and Victoria Police lead the way toward a brighter, inclusive future.
