Injustice against the oppressed must never be tolerated, especially when the lives of innocent civilians are at stake. Recent revelations about Israel’s military actions in Gaza have brought to light a horrifying truth: the use of nuclear weapons against civilians. [1]

Dr Christopher Busby, a renowned expert on the health effects of radiation, recently published findings confirming that Israel has been using enriched uranium in its bombings. His study, reported by Al Mayadeen on September 6, 2024, reveals that soil samples taken from bomb craters in southern Lebanon contain enriched uranium, an element not naturally found in such circumstances.

This points to the use of neutron bombs, a type of nuclear weapon specifically designed to release radiation while minimising structural damage.

The consequences of this are staggering. Neutron bombs primarily kill through the release of radiation, which can pass through walls and buildings, targeting human beings while leaving infrastructure relatively intact.

This radiation then contaminates the soil and environment, making it unsafe for human habitation. In Gaza, one of the most densely populated areas in the world, this means that even those who survive the initial blasts are left to suffer from radiation poisoning, cancers, and other long-term health effects.

Dr Busby’s findings are not an isolated case. Since 2008, evidence has been mounting that Israel has used nuclear weapons in its military operations in both Gaza and Lebanon. In 2021, scientists published the results of analyses from 65 soil and building material samples collected in Gaza, all of which contained enriched uranium.

This means the presence of nuclear contamination dating back to at least 2014, long before the current conflict escalated in October 2023.

For Gaza’s civilians, this adds another layer of suffering to an already unbearable reality. The ongoing Israeli blockade makes it nearly impossible to decontaminate affected areas or provide medical treatment for those exposed to radiation.

Families live amidst radioactive debris, and children play in contaminated soil. The lack of international outcry only deepens this tragedy, as major institutions like the UN and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have remained silent in the face of these findings.

The use of nuclear weapons against civilian populations is a violation of international law and human decency. Yet, Israel has not faced accountability for these actions. As Muslims, we are called to speak out against such injustices.

The Prophet Muhammad (s) instructed us to support the oppressed, regardless of where they are. The people of Gaza are suffering a prolonged, devastating attack on their right to live in safety and dignity.

We must raise our voices to demand justice from our Federal MPs in each of the electoral seats we live in. The use of nuclear weapons is a crime that should not go unpunished. It is essential that the international community, particularly those who stand for human rights, work to hold Israel accountable for these war crimes.

The suffering of Gaza’s civilians cannot be ignored. It is time for us to act, to speak, and to pray for justice and peace.

If the two major parties are unwilling to listen to the needs and concerns of the people, it becomes crucial to consider voting for independents and Greens, or candidates that prioritise community-driven policies, environmental sustainability, and international justice, reflecting the voices of Muslims that have been for far too long marginalised by mainstream politics.
