It’s National Volunteer Week in Australia, a time to honour the selfless and tireless contributions of millions of Australians every year.

According to Volunteering Australia it’s estimated that almost 6 million people in Australia volunteer their time though a registered organization annually with almost a third being young people aged 15 years and over.  (1)

This is truly a remarkable and heartwarming accomplishment and a testament to our wholesome Australian values of supporting those in need or supporting a noble cause.

It’s National Volunteer Week from Monday 20 to Sunday 26 May 2024. Volunteering for peace and justice for the people of Gaza can be a meaningful way for both young people and older Australians to make positive contributions towards ending the Gaza genocide and highlighting Israeli atrocities being committed against Palestinians

Here are several ways volunteers can get involved and lend their support to ending the Gaza genocide;

Humanitarian Organizations: Partner with reputable and established organizations such as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the Red Cross, or international NGOs like Doctors Without Borders or non-profit organisations like Human Appeal Australia, to provide crucial humanitarian aid to Gaza. Volunteers can assist with fundraising, advocacy, or hands-on relief efforts where possible.

Advocacy Groups: Join advocacy groups dedicated to raising awareness about the injustices against Palestinians and the Gaza genocide. Through campaigns, petitions, peace rallies, and lobbying efforts, volunteers can amplify voices and push for political solutions and human rights. Advocacy groups play and important role in boycotting and divestment from complicit companies and upholding International Human Rights Laws.

Media & Communications: Keep a close eye on media bias and publicly call out agencies who are deliberately misrepresenting the situation in Gaza and relaying news that are inaccurate or blatant distortions. Equally, support media outlets, social media campaigns, or grassroots journalism initiatives on the ground in Gaza, who are offering first-hand accounts and lived experiences offering accurate and balanced coverage of the Gaza genocide. Volunteers can contribute content, offer translations and advocacy on social media platforms to amplify Palestinian voices.

Arts and Creative Initiatives: Young people can volunteer their time and talents and contribute to arts and creative initiatives promoting and advocating for greater peace and an end to the Gaza genocide in the form of murals, poetry, or songs like Macklemore’s now famous song Hind’s Hall. Macklemore announced that all proceeds from this song would go to the United Nations Relief & Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinian refugees.

Solidarity Campaigns: Take part in solidarity campaigns advocating for an end to the blockade, occupation, and violence in Gaza and stopping the supply of arms used in the Gaza genocide. Whether through boycotts, divestment, or sanctions, volunteers can stand in solidarity with those fighting for justice.  According to BDS Australia, “Elbit Systems is the subject of international condemnation and divestment due to it’s complicity with Israel’s severe violations of international law and human rights conventions.” (2)  Elbit Systems has a base here in Melbourne and in Brisbane.

Political Engagement: Engage in political activism to hold governments accountable for their policies toward Gaza and Palestine. This may involve contacting elected officials, participating in peace protests, or supporting political candidates who prioritise peace and justice and human rights for all.

By volunteering your time in these various capacities, everyone can play an important role in ending the Gaza genocide.

In the words of Margaret Mead “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful people could change the world.  Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
