Indian Crescent Society of Australia organised a panel discussion on “Challenges in maintaining Australia’s multicultural harmony amidst international events in Gaza and Israel” at Parramatta Library on Thursday 30 November 2023 attended by more than thirty participants from all walk of life.
A collaborative assembly involving governmental bodies, community representatives, and religious organizations focussed on upholding a harmonious and respectful society amidst the ongoing demonstrations supporting both Israel and Palestine in Sydney and across Australia.
The distressing loss of innocent lives, hostage situations, imposed blockades, and the acute scarcity of essential resources such as food, water, and medical supplies deeply concern us all. The unfolding international events evoke feelings of sadness, distress, and anger among many. Regardless of religious affiliations or beliefs, witnessing the suffering of children or the loss of family members profoundly impacts individuals on an emotional level.
The fundamental right to express our views, emotions, and concerns is a cornerstone of Australian society that we all aim to preserve. The right to peaceful protest stands as a defining feature of our democratic values. However, recent events have posed a genuine threat to maintaining a cohesive and respectful community environment.
Reports from forum attendees highlighted the cancellation of an interfaith event due to safety concerns raised by local authorities and the abandonment of a planned indigenous reconciliation gathering in Western Sydney due to the potential for violence. In some parts of Sydney, streets that were once bustling with early morning activities are now deserted, reflecting the unsettling atmosphere.
The prevailing sentiment among community representatives emphasized the urgent need for peace and mutual respect within our communities. There is a call for renewed dialogue to foster understanding and support for those experiencing profound anguish.
Equally, there was a consensus that one-sided political statements and sensationalist media headlines are exacerbating the pain, offence, and indignity experienced by many within Australia’s diverse multicultural community.
The existing harmony and cooperation among religious and ethnic communities stand as invaluable assets of Australian society. Now is the time to actively leverage these established relationships.
The forum, orchestrated by ICSOA and the Multicultural Communities Council of NSW, perceives this effort as an ongoing endeavour.
While acknowledging the vital importance of the right to protest as a means of vocalizing concerns, it also emphasizes the necessity of maintaining a harmonious Australia.
