On Christmas eve, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid down the foundation stone of the 192m Shivaji statue, on a reclaimed island four km off the coast of Mumbai. Funded by tax payers the highly controversial project will cost $720 million and will be completed by 2019.

The project has been heavily criticised that this money can better be spent on education and health rather than the statue off a Hindu warrior who fought the Muslim Mughals who built the Taj Mahal.

The ruling Hindu nationalist party BJP has been accused of further creating a wedge between Muslim and Hindu Indians by promoting such projects.
