“You are my angel”
Many parents say this to their children with love and happiness.
Children get introduced to angels from a very early age. Often, they are called angels, or they read angel’s stories in story books, and they develop a good idea about angels.
With that good idea, children are expected to be well-behaved like angels. They are taught that the opposite of angels are devils, and devils are bad-mannered. Children are encouraged to be like angels and not like devils.
Why do we need to educate our children about angels? The answer is that believing in angels is one of the six pillars in Iman (Islamic faith).
These six pillars are for memorising, saying and deeply believing in. They are:
“Aamantu Billahi, wa-malaa-ikatihi, wa-kutubihee, wa-rusulihee, wal-Yaumil Aakhiri, wal Qadr.”
I believe in Allah, and in HIS angels, and in His Holy Books, and in His Messengers, and in the next life, and in Qadr.
Why should we educate them the correct concept of angels according to Islamic faith? The answer is that we must save them from wrong ideas about angels. If they learn from fairy tales about angels, they may be deprived from the real concept of angels.
True Imaan (Islamic faith) requires the true education from Allah’s Message about angels. Angels are unseen, created by Allah, and only Allah can teach us the truth about them.
That’s why, as Muslim parents, we should take special care in teaching our children the correct concept of angels for their correct Imaan (Islamic faith).
Are there wrong beliefs about the angels? Yes, there are many. If we are not checking about what our children are learning, then children can learn wrong faith about angels.
For example, some people believe the angels are God’s daughters (May Allah save us from this wrong belief), or Satans are fallen angels, or Angels make mistakes, or after death loved ones turn to angels etc.
How can we safeguard our children from wrong belief about angels? The answer is that we should start telling angel’s stories to our children according to Quran and Hadis. Stories like:
- Who are Allah’s angels?
- Why did Allah create them?
- What are they created from?
- What is the purpose of their creation?
- What are the differences between them and humans?
- How many angels are with each one of us?
- Which angel takes our soul away at death?
There are so many stories to tell our children about the angels. Why don’t we start now?
