The Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA) NSW branch held their inaugural meeting in Riverina on Sunday 20 August at the Equex Centre to provide a platform for Muslim health professionals in Wagga Wagga to connect, learn, and collaborate.

Dr Ali Elmosallamy, a GP, welcomed the attendees and was the MC of the program.

Dr Ashraf Chehata, Vice President of AIMA Victoria, gave a thought-provoking and motivational talk on “Healing with Hearts: Embracing Spirituality and Professional Integrity in clinical practice.”

He spoke about the Islamic perspective on professionalism, honesty, integrity, and clinicians’ responsibilities towards patients with reference to the teachings of the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (s).

This was a RACGP approved accredited activity.

Dr Muhammad Kahloon, a Canberra-based Urologist and National President of AIMA, gave a keynote speech on the aims, objectives and needs of a Muslim healthcare professional organisation.

He informed the audience about different national campaigns conducted by AIMA, such as the lifesavers program for equipping the Muslim community with lifesaving skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of AED.

The Lifesavers program is conducted at mosques and Islamic centres across all Australian states and territories.

The blood donation drive is another successful campaign conducted by AIMA in collaboration with the Australian Red Cross lifeblood team for many years. It has helped many patients needing regular blood transfusions.

The Australian Red Cross awarded AIMA a championship trophy for their continued work.

AIMA conducts networking career guidance and leadership development programs for medical students and young doctors.

Dr Kahloon also emphasised the importance of unity among Muslim healthcare professionals to inspire them to serve the community.

The meeting was also attended by Dr Habib Bhurawala, AIMA National Vice President and Dr Muhammad Ashraf, AIMA National Secretary, online through Zoom.

This was followed up with Q&A and networking lunch.

The program was concluded with Asr prayer.

Everyone was enthused and motivated to serve the community.
