Australia`s birds, what a mixed crew!
There`s the raucous, screeching white cockatoo
and the determined, direct, no-nonsense magpie,
and the nuisance, fruit-eating, small silver-eye.
Among the biggest of all are the pelicans
whose beak can hold more than their belly can;
they look around with a judicious expression
before flying off on a fishing expedition.
The parrots are studies in complementary colours
with crimson, yellow, turquoise feathers;
they are the arrows of the air; in a flutter, they disappear.
