The Muslim community of New Zealand has lost one of its most respected elders with the passing of Mohammed Hanif Ali in Auckland on 21 June 2026. A dedicated community servant, family man, and longstanding advocate for Islamic institutions, his life was marked by decades of commitment to faith, service, and collective wellbeing.
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn
Born in Fiji before settling in New Zealand, Hanif Ali was among the generation that helped establish and strengthen Muslim community life during its formative years.
Through perseverance, vision, and quiet determination, he contributed to the development of organisations and structures that continue to serve Muslims throughout the country.
Throughout his lifetime, he occupied a number of important leadership positions. He served as Secretary-General of the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) and was also actively involved with the International Muslim Association of New Zealand (IMAN).
In these capacities, he worked alongside fellow community leaders to advance the interests of Muslims and support the growth of representative institutions at both regional and national levels.
One of the causes closest to his heart was the development of the Jāmiʿ Masjid in Kilbirnie, Wellington. His efforts in supporting and nurturing this important mosque helped establish it as a focal point for worship, education, and community engagement. The benefits of that work continue to be felt by worshippers and families today.
Those who encountered Hanif Ali often speak less about his formal responsibilities than about his personal qualities. He was known for his hospitality, sincerity, and willingness to assist others without seeking recognition.
Students, new migrants, visitors, and community members frequently found a welcoming presence, practical assistance, and thoughtful guidance in his company.
He possessed an exceptional knowledge of community history and was regarded by many as an invaluable source of information about the development of Islam in New Zealand.
His recollections, experiences, and insights helped preserve important aspects of a story that might otherwise have been forgotten.
Even in later life, he remained actively interested in community affairs and continued to share his wisdom and experience whenever called upon. His dedication never sought prominence; rather, it reflected a deep sense of responsibility toward serving others and strengthening the bonds of community.
Mohammed Hanif Ali leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond the offices he held. It endures through the institutions he helped build, the friendships he cultivated, and the many individuals whose lives were enriched by his kindness and counsel.
He is survived by his children, Rehanna and Feroz Ali, and is reunited with his beloved wife, the late Johanna Ali.
May Allah Most High forgive his shortcomings, accept his lifetime of service, and grant him the highest ranks of Jannah. May He also grant patience and comfort to all who mourn his passing. Āmīn.
