Why I wrote The Heart of Marriage.
Marriage is one of the most important institutions in society. It is the foundation of strong families, healthy communities, and the nurturing of future generations. Yet, over the years, I have become increasingly concerned by the growing number of young couples, particularly within the Muslim community, who are ending their marriages over issues that could often be resolved through patience, understanding, communication, and mutual respect.
This concern was one of the main reasons I wrote The Heart of Marriage. Through my community work, I have witnessed many marriages break down due to misunderstandings, unrealistic expectations, financial pressures, poor communication, interference from others, or disagreements over relatively minor matters. In many cases, the couples involved genuinely loved each other but lacked the knowledge, skills, and guidance needed to navigate the challenges of married life.
Islam places great importance on marriage and family stability. While divorce is permitted, it is regarded as a last resort when all sincere efforts at reconciliation have been exhausted. Couples are encouraged to seek advice, mediation, counselling, and family support before considering separation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasised kindness, compassion, and patience within marriage, qualities that are essential for building lasting relationships.
My intention in writing this book was not to present marriage as a perfect union free from difficulties. Every marriage experiences challenges. Rather, I wanted to provide practical guidance that helps couples understand that disagreements and hardships are normal parts of married life. What matters is how couples respond to these challenges together.
The book presents 39 foundations for building a peaceful, strong, and meaningful marriage. It explores topics such as communication, trust, forgiveness, respect, gratitude, financial responsibility, emotional support, conflict resolution, and spiritual growth. Each chapter encourages readers to reflect on their relationships and develop habits that strengthen the bond between husband and wife.
I also wrote this book for young people preparing for marriage. Many enter marriage with high expectations but little preparation. Just as we study for a profession or prepare for a career, we should also prepare ourselves for marriage. A successful marriage requires commitment, effort, sacrifice, and continuous learning.
Ultimately, The Heart of Marriage is a message of hope. It reminds us that strong marriages are not built by perfect people, but by imperfect people who choose to love, forgive, and grow together. If this book helps even a few couples strengthen their relationships, overcome difficulties, and avoid unnecessary divorce, then its purpose will have been fulfilled.
