The Australian Muslim Advocacy Network (‘AMAN’) has informed a new United Nations report into the misuse of counterterrorism measures to restrict fundamental freedoms and curb legitimate activities.

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms undertook the Global Study on the Impact of Counter-Terrorism on Civil Society & Civic Space.

The report echoed AMAN’s concerns about the ongoing detention of teenagers, who could face adult sentences under terrorism charges or be detained because of their association with adults suspected of terrorism.

Moreover, the Government often attempted to commodify and use Muslim organisations and counterterrorism researchers as instruments for furthering government policy.

The report revealed widespread concern that counter-terrorism and countering violent extremism are being used to limit civic space and protest across the globe.
