The Islamic Community Academic Network (ICAN), organised an Eid brunch for Muslim academics and higher degree research students across Sydney on Saturday 22 July 2023 at the ISRA Centre in Auburn.

The program reiterated ICAN’s goals, celebrated ICAN members’ achievements and introduced new ICAN initiatives.

Hannan Mansuri, a member of the ICAN Steering Committee, addressed attendees and articulated the vision of ICAN as an academic platform for all Australian Muslim academics to connect and create opportunities for cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary collaborations in areas of engagement, teaching and learning, and research.

Dr Khushnood led an interactive ice-breaker activity on finding the most commonalities among members in the groups. This helped participants get to know members in their groups within a short time frame. The activity generated discussion and engagement among members.

Mouna Elmir convened a panel comprising of Associate Professor Omar Mubin of Western Sydney University, Dr Rifaie Tammas of University of Sydney, Dr Ülkü İstiklal Ortakaya from Western Sydney University,  Ankara Yıldırım from Beyazıt Üniversitesi, Dr Rhonda Itaoui from Western Sydney University, all of who have reached significant milestones in each careers.

The panellists provided insights into their experiences and highlighted challenges and barriers they overcame to achieve success. A successful Q & A followed.

While nibbling the delicious food, academics from diverse fields met and exchanged ideas. The attendees enjoyed the opportunity to connect with their fellow academics from different fields and universities at the ISRA Centre.

Upcoming events were announced such as a ‘Salam and Write’ Session to be held on Friday 25 August and a Career Expo next year in 2024.
