Councillor and Deputy Mayor Bilal El-Hayek was elected last night Thursday 11 May as the new Mayor of the Canterbury-Banktown Council, one of the largest in the country.

A highly popular and approachable politician, he thanked his supporters for the confidence and help he has received over the years in serving the community.

“One of the proudest moments of my life to be elected Mayor of one of the largest Councils in Australia. So many people to thank for helping and supporting me achieve my dream,” he said after being successfully elected..

He further said, “My message to young people is simple. If a kid like me, who came to this country with no English can make it, you can.”

Bilal filled the vacancy after being the only candidate to contest the position of Mayor after the long standing Mayor Khal Asfour stepped down from the position.

Another potential contender  former Deputy Mayor, Councillor Khodr Saleh, had ruled himself out of the contest for mayorship.

“After careful consideration and discussions with his colleagues and family, I will not be running to replace Khal Asfour as Mayor of the City of Canterbury,” Councillor Khodr Saleh said.
