The Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN) has condemned Trump’s Middle East Plan as unashamedly biased towards Israeli interests pointing out that 30 years after the fall of South African apartheid, Trump and Netanyahu are now imposing their own version of an Apartheid Plan on Palestinians.
Two Australian peak Muslim bodies, AFIC and ANIC have called on the Australian government to outrightly reject this plan and stand up to genuine rights of Palestinians and hold Israel to account for its complete disregard for international law and its brutal oppression of Palestinians.
US President Trump’s “Plan” developed in cohort with Israeli PM Netanyahu was unveiled by both of them on Tuesday 28 January 2020, ironically at a time, when both leaders are under investigation for corruption in their respective countries.
The main architect of this so called Middle East peace plan is Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, an ardent supporter of Israel who, using his personal friendships, has managed to get support from the authoritarian elites in gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain as well as Egypt.
The “Plan” recognises Israeli sovereignty over major illegal settlement blocs and grants security control of the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank while declaring Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel.
Exposing this sell out “Plan” for the Palestinians, APAN President Bishop George Browning said, “It’s time to see past this theatre, and be crystal clear on one single thing: The Israeli state wants to grab as much Palestinian land as possible with as few Palestinian people as possible on it.”
“This proposal represents the US backing the most extreme Israeli positions – permanently claiming much of the West Bank; limiting Palestinian sovereignty into the future, and denying Palestinian refugees their basic rights.”
“The Trump administration is trashing all the principles of international law that would allow for a just solution, and instead rewarding Israel for its unlawful and immoral practice of the occupation and control of Palestinians.”
“Palestinians have no option but to reject this so-called peace plan. Palestinians cannot accept a swiss cheese map of the West Bank. The only solution is full equality and justice. Everything else is theatrics to distract from the reality of apartheid,” Bishop George Browning concluded.
The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) in a media release said that it is deeply concerned by, and rejects, the so called Israeli-Palestinian peace deal, proposed by the US Trump administration.
“The proposal is not a peace deal, but rather a preference for the stronger party- Israel.
The peace deal continues to legitimise Israel’s ongoing rights violations and occupation policies against the Palestinians and widens the existing political division between the two states.
ANIC urges the Australian government to oppose and reject the proposed peace deal and bring equity and fairness to the discussion.”
