Event Details

The New Beginnings: Refugee Arts & Culture Festival 2016 invites people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and celebrate the talents, skills and cultural diversity of people from refugee backgrounds.

Refugees and asylum seekers bring stories of tremendously difficult journeys and challenging circumstances, but they also bring vibrant and unique cultural expressions and heritage with them, including beautiful dance and music, delicious food and new visual perspectives.

Following the success of the inaugural New Beginnings: Refugee Arts & Culture Festival 2015, which brought together over 1,000 people at Addison Road Community Centre in Marrickville, the 2016 program has been expanded to invite more people to celebrate the cultural heritage and artistic talents of refugees and asylum seekers.

New Beginnings: Refugee Arts & Culture Festival 2016 will feature three events:

Arts & Culture Festival

To be held on June 18 at Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour, the main festival will feature live music and dance performances, workshops, and food and market stalls.

Art Exhibition

Held between 17-26 June at Chrissie Cotter Gallery in Camperdown, this multi-faceted exhibition will feature visual art, photography, multimedia, installation and film screenings. The exhibition will be presented with the support of Marrickville Council as part of Open Marrickville 2016.

Community Meal

New Beginnings 2016 will close with a community Iftar dinner on June 29 to celebrate the break of the fast during Ramadan.

New Beginnings: Refugee Arts & Culture Festival 2016 is a family friendly, all ages event. Everyone is welcome!
