The Salaam Institute hosted a powerful evening on Thursday 9 October at the Islamic College of Brisbane, with cricket star Usman Khawaja at the heart of the conversation. Known not only for his sporting achievements but also for his courage to speak openly about faith and identity, Usman shared his personal journey of navigating professional sport while staying anchored to his values.
The event, titled Fearless Faith – Building an Australian Muslim Identity, brought together students, families, community leaders, and advocates for a night that was both deeply reflective and forward-looking.

From Usman’s honest reflections on the challenges of being visibly Muslim in elite sport, to the strength he draws from his faith, the audience was invited into a raw and real discussion on what it means to stand firm in who you are — especially when the spotlight is on you.
Joining Usman on stage was Professor Talal Yassine AM, who offered a broader perspective on leadership and representation in Australia, urging young Muslims to embrace their identity with confidence while investing in their future through education, ethics, and financial independence.

Ali Kadri, CEO of the Islamic College of Brisbane, also delivered a moving address on nurturing young people and building environments where faith is not just accepted, but celebrated.
Imam Uzair Akbar opened the night with spiritual reflections that grounded the event in a sense of community and purpose. His words reminded everyone that faith, when rooted in love and unity, becomes the foundation for building stronger families, communities, and ultimately, a more inclusive Australia.

The night was not only about keynote speakers — it was also about connection. Conversations continued long after the formalities ended, with attendees reflecting on their own experiences and engaging in meaningful dialogue about belonging and identity.
The presence of young people from across the city added a sense of hope, as many voiced their appreciation for seeing role models who reflect their values and lived realities.

Hosted by the Salaam Institute, this event was a testament to the power of storytelling, visibility, and spaces that allow the community to come together with purpose.
With heartfelt thanks to all who made the night possible — from the speakers to the volunteers and attendees — it’s clear that this wasn’t just another community event. It was a milestone moment that left a lasting impact.
