Dr Majharul Talukder, an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Business, University of Canberra, tragically lost his life in a road accident on Sunday evening 8 December 2024.
The incident occurred on Burley-Griffin Way, a major highway in New South Wales, Australia.
Dr Majhar was a well-known figure in the Bangladeshi Australian community for his active involvement in religious and social activities.
His untimely demise has left countless people mourning across Australia and beyond.
Dr Majhar had been an active member of the Islamic Practice and Dawah Circle (IPDC), one of Australia’s leading religious, social, and charitable organisations.
On the day of the accident, he was travelling with his family after attending an IPDC event in the Yass region. While driving back to Canberra, their car met with an accident on the New South Wales section of the highway.
According to family members, a heavy metallic object from an oncoming vehicle flew across the highway, smashing their car’s windshield and striking Dr Majhar, who was driving.
Although the car came to a stop on the highway, fortunately, no other family members were injured. Emergency services arrived promptly, but Dr Majhar, aged only 49, passed away at the scene.
Dr Majhar was not only an accomplished academic but also deeply dedicated to his faith and community. He had been actively involved with like-minded student and social organisations since his early years, including during his time at the International Islamic University of Malaysia, where he completed his undergraduate studies with distinction.
He later pursued higher studies in Germany, the United States, and Australia before joining the University of Canberra, where he had been teaching for 16 years.
Dr Majhar’s ancestral home is in Char Haripur, Mymensingh, Bangladesh.
Dr Majhar’s contributions extended beyond the Bangladeshi Muslim community to the broader Muslim community in Australia.
He played a pivotal role in IPDC’s leadership and policymaking and was known for his humble, hardworking, and cheerful personality.
He was also a co-founder and board secretary of the Islamic School of Canberra and a key organiser of the Belconnen Mosque project.
Colleagues and friends have requested prayers for Dr Majhar’s departed soul and strength for his grieving family.
On behalf of all IPDC members, the organisation’s president, Dr Moniruzzaman, also urged everyone to keep Dr Majhar in their prayers.
