The Australian National Imams Council lead by the Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamad this morning declared the commencement of Ramadan 1442 fasting starting on Tuesday 13 April 2021 for Australia.

This follows the recent pattern of declaring the important events in the Islamic calendar well in advance in order to mitigate the element of surprise and confusion, best practice in planning and forging community unity.

Thus according this declaration of Ramadan commencing on Tuesday 13 April, Eid-ul-Fitr will be most probably celebrated on Thursday 13 May 2021 after completing 30 days of fasting.

Islamic dates are subject to the visibility of the new moon and variation can take place if this sighting of the crescent is done globally, regionally or locally.

The following possible scenarios can occur this year 2021:

  1. Global Sighting (or prediction of sighting)
Ramadan (30 days) starting Tuesday 13 April and ending Wednesday 12 May with Eid on Thursday 13 May 2021.
  2. Regional Sighting Ramadan (29 days) starting Wednesday 14 April and ending Wednesday 12 May with Eid on Thursday 13 May 2021.
  3. Local Sighting Ramadan (30 days) starting Wednesday 14 April and ending Thursday 13 May with Eid on Friday 14 May 2021.
