Dr Daud Batchelor has written a fascinating book on the Prophet’s leadership skills using modern Western business leadership principles to argue that the Prophet Muhammad (s) was the ultimate leader.
Because of this approach, the book is very accessible to both Non-Muslims and Muslim audiences alike and presents a very convincing argument for its conclusion.
As the renowned international scholar, Professor Mohammad Hashim Kamali says in his forward to the book, it is commendable for “bringing to life Prophet Muhammad’s (s) sayings, actions and approvals related to the outstanding traits of leadership and the key principles with which he governed and inspired the nascent Muslim community in Arabia”.
The author quotes numerous best-selling Western business “gurus” to list 17 essential leadership qualities and then relies on the Quran and Hadith and many examples from the Prophet’s life to argue that he met all of these requirements.
As anyone that has ever visited a good bookshop’s business section will attest, there are dozens of best-selling books that focus on the attributes of the best leaders and some of these have taken a scientific approach to ascertaining the secrets of success. This book uses those criteria to examine the record of the Prophet.
The book also provides a concise explanation of the Prophet’s life story, the struggles he faced and how he overcame them. And it spells out the essential management principles he adopted as the ultimate change leader and excellent role model.
The author has utilised his background in both science, business and Islamic studies to great effect in this book which has extensive footnotes and bibliography.
The conclusion is that it is up to each of us to adopt the leadership traits of the Prophet in our daily lives and to inculcate these traits into the Muslim youth as the future leaders of our community and for the benefit of society as a whole.
