The former President of the Albanian Australian Islamic Society (AAIS) received the Multicultural Award for Meritorious Service to the Community on Tuesday 19 November 2019 a reception at Government House on the occasion of the presentation of Victoria’s Multicultural Awards for Excellence, hosted by The Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria and Mr Anthony Howard AM QC.
Victoria’s Multicultural Awards for Excellence recognise the outstanding achievements of people and organisations who strengthen multiculturalism. The awards are proudly coordinated by the Victorian Multicultural Commission on behalf of the Victorian Government.
After opening speeches by Linda Dessau and the Honourable Richard Wynne (Minister for Multicultural Affairs) recipients from across Victoria were presented their awards.
Vahid was recognised for his work as President of the AAIS from 2006-2017 where he devoted his time to preserve and share the Albanian culture and Muslim faith and promote cross-cultural and inter-faith harmony in Melbourne.
In Vahid’s words: “Insha-Allah, the corresponding award brings more recognition to the wonderful work our Society regularly performs – through the continuous efforts of volunteers – further raising the Albanian Australian Islamic Society’s profile and standing in the community,” said Vahid.
With the Executive Committee’s approval on behalf of the AAIS, I chose to nominate Vahid for his 21 years of service to the AAIS and in a year where we celebrate 50 Years as Melbourne’s First Mosque.
I worked closely with Vahid for 12 years and admired his passion, work ethic and commitment not only within the AAIS, but for the whole Muslim and broader community.
Along with my wife Indira, we began the application process and collected many support letters from representatives of other Islamic bodies, Council and Government representatives. The application and support letters detailed Vahid’s many achievements in his former role as President of the AAIS.
In my humble opinion, he is most deserving of this award and may Allah reward him and his family for all his efforts in this life and the hereafter.
On behalf of the AAIS, I congratulate Vahid on his great achievement.
